Mariano Rivera in Connecticut at Ridgefield High
.
12/21/13, "
Yankees legend Mariano Rivera lends a hand in Ridgefield," newstimes.com, (Danbury, Ct.) John Nestor
"The event was held as a fundraiser for both Rivera's church,
Refugio de Esperanza, in New Rochelle, NY and Tiger Hollow Inc., which is raising funds to put lights up at Tiger Hollow II,
Guido Maiolo Field....
Rivera went on to talk about what an honor it was to be the last
player to wear No. 42 and say his greatest honor as a ball player was to
be able to put on the Yankee uniform every day. He also said his
childhood sports hero was the great Pele and that he loved soccer as
a child.
Thee were a number of lighter moments too like when Rivera gave credit to
Edgar Martinez as the toughest batter he faced when asked by a young fan who was the most feared hitter he went up against.
"First I have to say there was no fear for any hitter," Rivera joked.
"
But Edgar Martinez, he was tough. I just couldn't get him out and
later in his career I was just thinking `god, get him out of here."
Rivera also said
Yogi Berra was his Yankee hero and he cherished the time he got to spend with him and that he may like to coach in the minors some day....
"
We are trying to get the lights built by next fall since this field is
used by the high school as well as the youth programs who would also
really benefit," Tiger Hollow president
John Pavain
said. "We need to raise approximately an additional $175,000 and today
will really help us get there and we couldn't thank Mariano enough."...photo by Lisa Weir, News Times

Mariano Rivera gets his street, NY City Council votes to rename River Ave. Rivera Ave.
.

Mariano Rivera gets his street," NY Post, Beth DeFalco, George A. King III

9/18/13 NY Post front page |
"
The City Council went to bat for Mariano Rivera Tuesday with a vote
to name a street outside Yankee Stadium in recognition of the Yankees’
ace pitcher.
“It’s an honor to have a street named after me,” Rivera told The Post afterwards.
“I have a lot of great memories driving down that street. My family and I are extremely grateful for this.”
Rivera, a future Hall-of-Famer and baseball’s all-time saves leader, retired this year after 19 years in pinstripes.
Council member Maria del Carmen Arroyo thanked The Post, which led the campaign to put up Rivera’s name in front of the stadium.
It’s unusual to name a street after someone who is still alive. But
Arroyo said she pushed the honor because Rivera is such a big hit with
her constituents, who demanded recognition for the retiring pitcher.
The vote was 47-0, with two abstentions, Jessica Lappin (D-Man.) and Peter Vallone (D-Queens). Bronx Bombers fan Thomas Ferrera persuaded Arroyo, whose district includes Yankee Stadium, to file the paperwork.
Foley’s NY Pub & Restaurant in Midtown also got in on the action,
holding a petition drive to encourage the Council to approve the bill.
In September, The Post featured a picture of die-hard fan Nicole
Saulter, who took matters into her own hands by sticking a makeshift “A”
to River Street across from the stadium,
changing the sign to “Rivera
Street.”
“It wasn’t happening quickly enough,” Saulter said. “I didn’t realize it takes so many steps.”
The renaming of River Ave. and 161st Street
could take up to three months."

Street Outside Yankee Stadium To Be Renamed After Mariano Rivera," newyork.cbslocal.com
"The City Council voted Tuesday to co-name
one block of River Avenue after him. The block,
which will be renamed Rivera Ave., is right outside Yankee Stadium.
Traditionally, a city street can only be co-named after someone who is deceased.
But exceptions can be made."

"
It was Mariano Rivera
Day Saturday at the recently opened Harman flagship store in Midtown
Manhattan in New York City, where the former Yankee reliever and future
Hall of Famer-also a JBL brand ambassador -appeared to sign
autographs, accept a presentation of a special
“
Fan MO-saic” created
from thousands of fans’ Instagram photos, and celebrate the impending
installation at the Refugio de Esperanza Church in Westchester, where he
is a member, of a JBL professional sound system as part of the church’s
restoration and renovation.
Hundreds
of admirers who learned of the event through social media and local
radio outreaches queued up outside the store as early as 7 a.m. in
freezing temperatures, and were served coffee and doughnuts as they
waited for the meet and greet, according to Ralph Santana, chief
marketing office for Harman International, who presented Rivera with the
artwork.
Once
inside, fans were encouraged to Instagram a photo of an area of the
Harman store, which, when tagged, would automatically enter them in a
contest for a chance to win one of 42 limited-edition Mariano Rivera JBL
Synchros S700 headphones featuring his Number 42, signature and the
Yankees logo.
Rivera
also met with and presented autographed headphones to 10 VIP winners of
an earlier Instagram contest, for which fans submitted favorite photos
which then were organized into the 3,400 “photo tiles” comprising the
mosaic, said Dave Spinato, global director of digital and social media
for Harman."

The World Series victories made Torre a celebrity. He attracted famous
