"Perhaps one of the reasons that Mariano Rivera maintained his greatness for so long was that he understood the power of pitching to contact. He understood that getting his opponents to pop out or weakly ground out as their bats shattered saved a lot of wear and tear on his arm.
This is not say to say he didn’t strike out his share of batters. Last night, Yankees reliever Dellin Betances struck out two to bring his season total to 130, tying him with Mo for the most strikeouts by a Yankees reliever.
Betances reached the 130 mark in only 86.2 innings. In 1996, when Rivera set the mark, he did it in 107.2 IP. He then went on to pitch 14.1 more innings in three postseason series against Texas, Baltimore, and Atlanta and gave up one run while striking out another 10. I think Betances’ arm would fall off if he had to pitch another 25 innings.
In 1996, Rivera had a strikeout rate of 30.6%, the highest of his career, and a groundball to flyball ratio of 0.67. That season, he threw 1433 pitches, the most of his career. The next season, he threw 1212 pitches and over the course of the next 16 years, he never threw more than 1185 pitches in a season."
