1/21/15, "Mariano Rivera and Joe Torre To Appear At 17th Annual Mary and Louis Fusco Distinguished Lecture," Southern Connecticut State University, New Haven, Ct.

"Baseball legends Mariano Rivera and Joe Torre will be the featured guests at the 17th annual Mary and Louis Fusco Distinguished Lecture at Southern Connecticut State University's John Lyman Center for the Performing Arts on Friday, April 10 at 7 p.m.

Rivera, the most dominating closer in the history of baseball, played 19 seasons (1995 to 2013) for the New York Yankees. The Sandman was a 13-time All-Star and 5-time World Series champion and is Major League Baseball's career leader in saves (652) and games finished (952). Outside of baseball, Rivera has been involved in philanthropic causes and the Christian community through the Mariano Rivera Foundation. With its emphasis on youth-oriented programs, the foundation makes a difference in the lives of thousands of underserved children in the United States and abroad.

Following a celebrated playing career, Baseball Hall of Fame Manager Joe Torre led the Yankees to 10 American League East division titles, six American League pennants, and four World Series championships from 1996 to 2007. Torre is also chairman of the Joe Torre Safe At Home Foundation, which he and his wife, Ali, launched in 2002. The foundation's mission is to develop educational programs to help end the cycle of domestic violence and save lives. In 2010, President Barack Obama appointed Torre to serve on the National Advisory Committee on Violence Against Women. Since October 2011, Torre has served as co-chair of the U.S. Justice Department's National Task Force on Children Exposed to Violence.

A portion of the proceeds from the lecture supports Southern's Endowed Awards of Excellence, a merit-based scholarship program.

A limited number of tickets remain for the event, while there is a waiting list for the pre-event VIP reception.

Any members of the media requesting credentials or inquiring about media availability should contact Patrick Dilger, SCSU Director of Public Affairs at dilgerp1@southernct.edu or via phone at 203-392-6588."
